How to Play
The Windrunners is a post-by-post roleplaying game based on the graphic novel series Elfquest (or ElfQuest), created by Wendy and Richard Pini in 1978.
The story revolves around a group of elves trying to survive and coexist with each other and the natives of Abode: an Earth-like planet with twin moons. Our game operates in the same world as Elfquest, but along a different canon, with player-created characters. Characters with direct connections to canon Elfquest characters are not permitted on The Windrunners (ie. no children of Ember and Teir, or cousins of Dart or Mender).

Character Creation
Player characters drive the plot forward, and make the game world more diverse and 'real'; we encourage creativity during character creation, but there are requirements and limitations:
Character Slots
Players are granted up to four character slots per tribe, with two granted at the start of play, and two granted upon review of player posting quotas. Players must meet their posting quotas for four consecutive months to be granted their third or fourth character slot; four consecutive months applies to each character slot, requiring a minimum of eight consecutive months before a player is granted their fourth character slot. Players may not create more than the two character slots granted at the start of play without approval from the Admin.
An example of this rule in action would be the following:
- Player A joins The Windrunners in Jan, 2016
- Player A creates Character 1 in Tribe Alpha, Jan, 2016
- Player A creates Character 2 in Tribe Alpha, Feb, 2016
- Player A misses their posting quota in March, 2016 (due to illness, vacation, etc.)
- Player A meets their posting quota in April, May, June and July 2016 (four months) and is granted a third character slot in Tribe Alpha
- Player A creates Character 3 in Tribe Alpha, Aug, 2016
- Tribe Beta opens to the public in Aug, 2016
- Player A creates Character 1 and Character 2 in Tribe Beta, Aug, 2016
- Player A meets their posting quota in Aug, 2016
- Player A misses their posting quota in Sept, 2016 (due to illness, vacation, etc.)
- Player A meets their posting quota in Oct, Nov, Dec 2016 and Jan 2017 (four months) and is granted a fourth character slot in Tribe Alpha and a third character slot in Tribe Beta
- Player A creates Character 4 in Tribe Alpha and Character 3 in Tribe Beta, Jan, 2017
- Player A meets their posting quota in Feb, March, April and May 2017 (four months) and is granted a fourth character slot in Tribe Beta
- Player A creates Character 4 in Tribe Beta, June, 2017
Magical Characters
Players are granted up to two Magical characters per tribe, with one granted at the start of play, and one granted as the fourth character slot (ie. a player cannot create a Magical character using their third character slot; however, a player may create a Magical character using their fourth character slot). The exception to this rule: a player may create a Magical character using their third character slot only when the first and second character slots are used for Non-Magical characters. There are no requirements to create Magical characters (ie. you may create up to four Non-Magical characters per tribe). Players may not create more than one magical character at the start of play without approval from the Admin.
An example of this rule in action would be the following:
- Player A joins The Windrunners in Jan, 2016
- Player A creates Character 1 (Magical) in Tribe Alpha, Jan, 2016
- Player A creates Character 2 (Non-Magical) in Tribe Alpha, Feb, 2016
- Player A misses their posting quota in March, 2016 (due to illness, vacation, etc.)
- Player A meets their posting quota in April, May, June and July 2016 (four months) and is granted a third character slot in Tribe Alpha
- Player A creates Character 3 (Non-Magical) in Tribe Alpha, Aug, 2016
- Tribe Beta opens to the public in Aug, 2016
- Player A creates Character 1 (Non-Magical) and Character 2 (Non-Magical) in Tribe Beta, Aug, 2016
- Player A creates Character 4 (Magical) in Tribe Alpha and Character 3 (Magical) in Tribe Beta, Jan, 2017
- Player A meets their posting quota in Feb, March, April and May 2017 (four months) and is granted a fourth character slot in Tribe Beta
- Player A creates Character 4 (Magical) in Tribe Beta, June, 2017
Exceptions
The Founders of The Windrunners originally created the Board as a private roleplaying game, and had not set character limitations at that time. As a result, some of the Founders have two Magical characters in The Windrunners, but have not used the maximum of four character slots (ie. their second or third character slot was used for a Magical character). To amend the imbalance with other players, Founders with two Magical characters are restricted from creating any additional Magical characters in The Windrunners. Founders are restricted to the same character limitations as other players in other tribes on The Windrunners.
Player characters must be hosted under an appropriate username and follow Board character creation rules. For more information see How to Create a Character.
